The São Fernando Fort, situated in the parish of Santa Cruz on the east coast of Madeira Island, holds immense historical significance. This monument stands as a testament to the archipelago’s defense strategies throughout its rich history.
Strategically positioned overlooking Santa Cruz Beach, the São Fernando Fort played a crucial role in safeguarding the region by providing timely observation of potential threats. Madeira was frequently targeted by corsair attacks, making fortifications like this one essential for protecting the local population.
Originally constructed in the 18th century, the fort underwent restoration during the liberal struggles under the supervision of sergeant-major Paulo Dias de Almeida. It was subsequently named ‘São Fernando Fort’ after an old chapel dedicated to the saint that once stood on the site. However, records indicate that this chapel no longer existed by 1820. Instead, the guardhouse was located near another chapel dedicated to Saint Lazarus, which has also since disappeared.
While visiting São Fernando Fort, take the opportunity to explore the vast heritage of Santa Cruz, a city located just 18 kilometers away from Funchal. Immerse yourself in the rich history and cultural treasures that this charming destination has to offer.
