It is divided into three parishes and is bordered by the municipalities of Porto Moniz and São Vicente to the north, Ribeira Brava to the east, Calheta to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south.
The name “Ponta do Sol” is derived from a historical event. In 1420, during a reconnaissance trip along the Madeira coast, João Gonçalves Zarco reached a point that protruded into the sea. There, he spotted a rock that was so polished by the crashing waves that it appeared to be illuminated by the sun’s rays, hence the name “Ponta do Sol.”
The settlement of Ponta do Sol dates back to around 1425, not long after the discovery of the island, when Portuguese settlers from Minho, Beiras, and Algarve arrived. Throughout history, the fertile soils of this area have been used for various agricultural crops. During the colonization period, it was one of the most active centers for agricultural production, particularly sugarcane.
As a testimony to its significance, on December 2, 1501, Ponta do Sol was granted the status of a town and municipal council by a royal decree from King Manuel I.
