Madeira Military Museum

The Madeira Military Museum, located in the historic São Lourenço Palace, was originally constructed in the early 16th century under the orders of King Dom Manuel I. Its primary purpose was to safeguard the people of Funchal. Today, this palace serves as the home of the Madeira Military Museum, which showcases a diverse collection of military and artistic artifacts.

In 1991, certain areas of the palace, which has been designated as a National Monument since 1943, underwent extensive renovations. Among these was the old Guard House, which was promptly transformed into the museum’s exhibition space. The Madeira Military Museum was officially established in 1993, offering visitors a captivating display of military history.

Within the three rooms of the former fortress, the museum proudly exhibits various collections of weaponry spanning from the 18th century to the present day. These collections include ancient bronze artillery pieces as well as an assortment of light weapons. Additionally, the museum employs innovative technology to provide a dynamic portrayal of the 600-year history of the Portuguese Army in Madeira.

Since 2010, the Madeira Military Museum has been organized into three distinct themes: ‘Madeira in the context of Portuguese expansion,’ ‘Military History of Madeira,’ and ‘Military Fortifications and Infrastructures of the Region.’ This configuration allows visitors to explore the rich historical significance of Madeira’s military heritage.
