Funchal Cathedral

Funchal Cathedral, designated as a National Monument since 1910, holds a significant place in the history, geography, and daily life of Funchal. As the primary religious church in the Madeira archipelago, it is renowned for its exceptional historical, architectural, and artistic significance.

Originally commissioned by King D. João II in 1493, Funchal Cathedral was completed during the early 16th century, showcasing distinct characteristics of the Manueline and Gothic periods. Notably, its façade boasts a magnificent Gothic portal crafted from Cabo Girão stonework, featuring eight archivolts in a pointed arch design.

Upon entering Funchal Cathedral, one’s attention is immediately captivated by the remarkable altarpiece. Adorned with a Gothic canopy, this large polyptych is intricately carved from gilded wood and complemented by sculptures and oil paintings on wood. The cathedral’s ceiling, crafted from cedar sourced from the island, is a monumental example of Mudéjar decoration, showcasing the artistic traditions of Islamic craftsmanship.

However, the artistic treasures within Funchal Cathedral extend beyond the altarpiece and ceiling. Within the main chapel, visitors will discover an elaborate chancel chair, while the monument also houses a processional cross, considered a masterpiece of Portuguese Manueline jewelry.

Located in the heart of Funchal’s historic center, Funchal Cathedral seamlessly blends elements of the Manueline and Gothic periods, representing the foremost religious institution in Madeira with an unparalleled heritage of value.
