The Cristóvão Colombo Statue in Vila Baleira’s Infante D. Henrique Avenue Garden stands as a testament to the significant role Christopher Columbus played in the history of Porto Santo. This beautiful bust, crafted by renowned Madeiran sculptor Ricardo Veloza in 1989, pays homage to the navigator who once resided in the Madeira archipelago.
During his time in Porto Santo, Columbus was initially involved in the sugar trade and later married Filipa de Moniz, the daughter of Porto Santo’s first captain, Bartolomeu Perestrelo. Their marriage took place in Lisbon in either 1479 or 1480. Following this, Columbus spent a period between 1480 and 1482 in Madeira, where he honed his nautical skills, marking a crucial phase in his training.
Porto Santo served as a vital technical stopover during maritime expeditions, and it was during his third voyage to America in 1498 that Columbus revisited the island. His connection to Porto Santo holds immense historical significance, making him an enduring symbol in the region.
The Cristóvão Colombo Statue, located in the heart of Vila Baleira, serves as a prominent reminder of the navigator’s profound impact on the island’s history. Its presence in the Infante D. Henrique Avenue Garden invites visitors to engage with the rich heritage and legacy of Christopher Columbus in Porto Santo.
