Following the demolition of the Teatro Grande in 1833, the people of Madeira longed for a new theater in Funchal. Finally, on March 11, 1888, the Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias was officially inaugurated. Inspired by renowned Italian theaters like São Carlos Theatre in Lisbon and La Scala Theatre in Milan, this theater stands as a remarkable example of Italian architectural influence.
Over the years, the theater underwent various name changes, reflecting the evolving times. Eventually, in 1935, it was named after Baltazar Dias, a blind playwright and poet born in Madeira during the 16th century. The Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre boasts not only architectural excellence but also stunning decoration and scenography by renowned artists Luigi Manini from Italy and Eugénio do Nascimento Cotrim from Portugal. Today, it stands as a prominent cultural hub in Portugal.
