This beautiful parish of São Jorge is connected to Santana by a road and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and mountains to the south. To the west, you’ll find the Arco de São Jorge parish, and to the east, the parishes of Ilha and Santana.
One of the highlights of this region is the impressive Baroque church, which is considered the most important rural church monument on the island. It was constructed with architectural and decorative elements from three predecessor churches, which unfortunately no longer exist. The construction of this church began in the 18th century, after the demolition of the New Church of Achada. It was dedicated on September 17, 1761, by Bishop D. Gaspar da Costa Brandão. Inside the church, you’ll find a magnificent João III altarpiece, as well as two side altars and two collateral altars. The church is adorned with various significant elements, such as the sacristy’s arched cabinet, the tabernacle, the ceiling of the main chapel, and the 16th and 17th-century tiles. The pulpit is also worth mentioning, as it adds to the grandeur of the church.
In addition to the main church, the parish is also home to the São Pedro Chapel, which dates back to the late 15th century. Another noteworthy chapel is the one dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, located in the Ribeira Funda area, which was completed around the year 2000. Historically, there were other chapels in the area, such as Santana (15th century, now in the current Santana parish), São Sebastião (16th century), Nossa Senhora da Piedade (16th century, now in the Arco de São Jorge parish), Santo António (16th/17th century, now in the Santana parish), and Nossa Senhora do Rosário (18th century, now in the Ilha parish).
Aside from its religious heritage, this region is known for its agriculture-based economy, with the local population primarily engaged in farming. Visitors to the area can enjoy the stunning natural surroundings, including the lush Laurissilva Forest, which covers half of the parish.
For those looking to explore further, nearby attractions worth considering are the beautiful parish of Santana, known for its distinctive triangular-shaped houses, and the charming village of Arco de São Jorge. Both places offer unique cultural experiences and picturesque landscapes.
